Start by carefully looking at the square framed area around the

broken glass. If the door is wood an older door will often have four small

pieces of wood holding the glass in place with small nails. Remove these

carefully because you will need to replace them once the broken glass is

removed. Often there are small metal clips that hold the glass under the

small wooden frame these also need to be removed. Sometime the glass is
held in by glazing compound, this can be removed with a putty knife.

Any good hardware store can cut you a small window from a sheet of glass.
And will have all the other supplies to install the new piece of glass Make
sure to measure the opening & bring a piece of the broken glass to match
for thickness. Cost for small 10x10 inch glass & supplies 25 dollars.

Cost to have it repaired by handyman or window repair man. Varies greatly
by area. From 50-200 dollars

New door installed from 250 dollars - & higher depending on type of door.

Finish breaking out the glass, then look to see how it was
sugar britches
fastened in. There should be strips framing the glass & attached to the

door to hold it in, The strips are either nailed in with small nails or

brads or glued.Remove the strips, measure the opening, then go to a glass

shop or local small hardware store that sells & cuts glass. One problem

might be the quality of the original as against the replacement glass. but
if you are not fussy there should be no problem.

If it is an outside door exposed to the weather you will need putty
to go between the glass & the wood strip
on the outside.

If the glass was held in by putty you will have to scrape out all the old
putty, bed the new glass in putty, then with a putty knife or table knife
smooth the putty at an angle against the glass. When it hardens paint over

I would call any local glass(even auto glass) store. It is
Hot Babe
usually inexpensive. I had to have a whole window pane replaced once and I

believe it was about $30.
